during vs while 차이 — '~하는 동안' 영어 표현 헷갈리지 않는 법

답은 하나다. 뒤에 오는 것의 품사를 보면 된다.

핵심 차이: 명사냐, 절이냐

during은 전치사(preposition)다. 뒤에 반드시 명사나 명사구가 와야 한다.

while은 접속사(conjunction)다. 뒤에 주어 + 동사로 이루어진 절이 와야 한다.

같은 상황, 다른 구조

같은 상황을 두 단어로 각각 표현할 수 있다. 구조만 달라진다.

during (+ 명사)	while (+ 절)
During the movie, I fell asleep.	While the movie was playing, I fell asleep.
He texted during class.	He texted while the teacher was talking.
During her trip, she tried sushi.	While she was traveling, she tried sushi.

during 뒤엔 'the movie', 'class' 같은 명사가 오고, while 뒤엔 'the movie was playing' 같은 절이 온다.
